“Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans” and
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is right now”…
Although I don’t know who to credit for these quotes, or if I am even quoting them correctly, I have to say that both of these quotes have played a major role in my life over the last few weeks. The last few weeks of my somewhat active life have been absolute chaos. Although mostly good stuff, I have to admit that things may have gotten a little out of control for a little bit there. Things got so out of control that I had to put my online business on pause for almost five weeks. I had no time to work on my business and barely had any time to keep up with what’s been going on in the Social Media world. It all just came out of the blue…Things were going great for me and my business in 2016 and I was really on a roll and then out of nowhere, “Life Happened”…
I’m sure that this has happened to you a few times in your life. Things are going good for you, you start to see some results in your business, or maybe in your fitness, you feel like you’re really starting to get the hang of your business, or your diet, or your fitness, and then……Boom!! Just like that “Life Happens”…. Something important or at least disruptive comes up, you take your eyes off the prize, and just like that everything that you’ve been working so hard to accomplish comes to a complete halt.. It feels like everything you worked so hard for is gone in a blink of an eye and you have to start back at square numero uno.
It doesn’t take much or take long to get knocked of of your horse. You start to miss a day or two here and there, and then before you know it, you are on a 4 week hiatus and you start to have anxiety attacks thinking about all of the crap you are going to have to do to make up for lost time and get back into the game. Sometimes the anxiety gets so bad that you ultimately just decide that it’s not worth the hassle of getting back in the game and you end up abandoning your business, or your diet, or for many people even their health. I’ve seen it happen dozens of times with all sorts of people from all walks of life.
The hardest part is realizing that although getting back on track may present quite the challenge, it is most definitely worth it. You have to remember why you got started in the first place and just muscle through it. The sooner you get started the better off you will be in the long run.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is right now”.. Don’t worry about the time you’ve wasted. Focus on getting started right now. Baby steps are ok. My first baby step was getting my office reorganized. Not a money producing activity but it got me back in my office and that gave me the drive to move onto my next project. You have to keep moving forward, step by step, until you get back into your routine.
You see, none of us are immune to life and none of us can avoid the unexpected. Life will catch up to almost every single one of us. The difference however, between successful people and unsuccessful people, is that successful people have systems and procedures in place, so that when “Life” does get in the way, they have a plan B just waiting to take effect in their absence. Even though I was away from my business for almost 6 weeks, moving and traveling and racing and hosting a mountain bike festival, I was still attracting leads, posting on social media and generating commissions. The automated marketing systems that I set up earlier in the year and have been working on for the last few months were in place to automatically take over for me in my absence.
Although I was stressed out about not playing an active role in my business for the last month and a half, the simple automated systems that I learned to set up helped me stay in business and stay connected. My marketing campaigns and sales funnels were working for me, on autopilot, even though I wasn’t spending very much time on my business.
Now granted, this was possible only because I invested the time, money and energy in learning, building, scaling and maintaining these systems. It wasn’t easy. I had to work long days and weekends to get these systems set up and running. It took time, money and energy, but was it worth it? Hell yes!!! I never imagined that I would be able to step away from my business for an extended period of time and still have a business that is generating leads and income on the other side of that.
Like I said before, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is right now”…
